The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling, announced this morning in Wakefield Cathedral that he will be retiring on Thursday, July 31 this year.
Dean Simon took up his post in September 2018, having previously served in parish and cathedral ministry in Leeds, Sheffield and North Yorkshire.
Reflecting on his time in Wakefield, Dean Simon said: “It has been a huge privilege to serve as Dean of this wonderful cathedral, to support Bishop Nick in his leadership of this young and unique diocese, and to work with so many people both within and beyond the Church for the common good of our city, diocese and region.
“I will miss Wakefield Cathedral and my colleagues here very much, but I am confident for its future under God.”
The Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, said: “Simon has served as Dean of Wakefield through some turbulent times in recent years.
“He has shown confidence and resilience whilst bring stability and consistency to cathedral life.
“As – uniquely – one of three deans in the diocese, his wisdom, advice and counsel will be missed.
“I am very sorry to see Simon go.
“I wish him and Anne a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.”
The Very Revd John Dobson, Dean of Ripon, said: “One of the advantages of being a cathedral dean in the Diocese of Leeds is having two close colleagues who are also cathedral deans.
“Simon worked in the diocese before his appointment to Wakefield, so he wasn’t a stranger.
“It has been a pleasure to work with him within the diocesan college of deans, as together, with the Dean of Bradford, we have ventured together to support the ministry of the Bishop of Leeds and that of the parishes and chaplaincies of this vast diocese.
“We in Ripon wish Simon and Anne well for their retirement.”
There will be a service of farewell for Dean Simon in Wakefield Cathedral on Sunday, July 6 at 3.30pm.
