Sweden comes to Wakefield thanks to a link visit

Our longstanding link with the Diocese of Skara, Sweden, was refreshed through a recent visit by the new Bishop of Skara, Ulrica Fritzson.

Bishop Ulrica was in Wakefield with several of her diocesan colleagues for four days and their visit culminated in a joyous Eucharist in the cathedral with the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds and when Bishop Ulrica was installed as an honorary ecumenical canon.

“Her first act was to read the lesson in Swedish!” said the Very Revd Simon Cowling, Dean of Wakefield.

“During their time in Wakefield, our visitors also spent time at the food pantry and drop-in centre at St Catherine’s Church, Wakefield, at the diocesan offices in Leeds talking about rural ministry and the Barnabas initiative, and at the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield.

“They also enjoyed a tour of the cathedral before venturing into the annual Wakefield rhubarb festival which had brought thousands of people into the city”

Reflecting on the visit Dean Simon said, “the gift of friendship in the body of Christ transcends national boundaries, and our visitors from Skara have been a real blessing to us in their time here. We look forward to deepening and strengthening our ties in the months and years to come”.
