The eye-catching result of an ambitious Remembrance Day project by members of the Mothers’ Union Knit and Natter group at St Chad’s, Far Headingley is gaining lots of attention.
Earlier this year the group decided to create a large poppy display to dress the church doors and the bright red result appeared at the beginning of November.
All ages were involved in making more than 1,000 knitted or crocheted red poppies, plus white poppies to symbolise a commitment to peace and in memory of all victims of war, and some purple poppies to honour animals that served or died in conflicts.
“Knitting and crocheting appeal to all ages and it’s been fabulous to see this creative project bringing together the younger and older generations of the church,” said Team Rector Revd Hannah Lievesley.
“The mixed colours in the display really pop and can be seen from right down on the busy Otley Road, making a vibrant reminder and tribute to those whose lives have been given and taken in war.”
The Mothers’ Union group plans to keep the display, which may develop into something bigger next year. Knit and Natter at St Chad’s takes place on the first Tuesday of the month in its parish centre bar and is open to all.
