Eco award given to Leeds Area church

First published on: 6th May 2022

St Mary Magdalene in East Keswick has been awarded a Silver Eco Church Award, signalling another step forward in their journey to look after the environment.

The Eco Church Award is run by A Rocha UK, a Christian charity working for the protection and restoration of the natural world, and rewards churches for implementing positive eco steps.

Amongst other things, St Mary’s has developed a ‘wilded’ area in the churchyard, and planted locally sourced apple trees as part of a Community Churchyard project.

The church are also looking forward to welcoming Colin Beale, author at A Rocha UK, on Sunday, May 22 to a joint parish service when they will celebrate Climate Sunday.

Both churches in the parish of Bardsey and East Keswick have now achieved silver status, which is testament to the church and local community who are working to promote environmental concerns.

Revd Angela Hannafin, vicar of Bardsey and East Keswick, said, “I’m delighted that St Mary Magdalene, East Keswick, has been awarded a Silver Eco Church award.

“This is due to the hard work of Environmental Champion Liz Parr, and Churchwarden Fiona Siekierkowski, with the support of the parish.

“It signals another step forward in our Eco journey.”

“We hope our example might encourage other smaller churches to give the eco award system a go.  It is quite straightforward and many churches are probably unaware that they could achieve bronze status easily. Why not try it?”
