A motion at General Synod introduced by the Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, on a report from the national Governance Review Group has passed at the most recent Synod meeting.
The motion follows a report put together by the Governance Review Group, chaired by Bishop Nick, in 2021, looking at how the governance of national Church institutions could be streamlined to improve the work of sharing the word and furthering the Kingdom of God going forward.
The passing of the motion means Synod has given its approval to a process of engagement on the recommendations made in the report, led by the Archbishops’ Council and the Church Commissioners and in which the Synod will be a major actor.
This exercise will involve the creation of a small project board, as well as a wider Synod reference group, to make sure that the work is informed by the range of opinions and concerns across the Church, both as expressed by Synod members, and also in the wider Church.
As part of the debate, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, Bishop of Ripon, made her maiden speech to General Synod.
