Generosity Week 2022 kicks off in our diocese at end of September

Generosity Week 2022 kicks off across our diocese at the end of September following its successful introduction during last autumn.

From Sunday, September 25, to Sunday, October 2, churches and individuals are encouraged to explore God’s generosity through eight days of service and worship materials.

There are many resources available that have been written by the experts in the National Giving Team, and they can be adapted for use by churches to suit different context and needs.

New resources produced for this year include the Generosity Newsletter, a Young Children’s Resource, and ideas on Engaging the Wider Community.

The Diocese of Leeds have also produced a guide to help Children and Young People explore Stewardship.

You can also watch a recorded webinar on ‘How to Run Generosity Week’.

All the materials are undated so can be used to hold a generosity week whenever suits a church best.

This year we are more aware of activities that many of our churches are planning for Generosity Week 2022.

Janet Edmond, Stewardship Officer at the Diocese of Leeds, said: “Generosity Week is a fantastic opportunity for us to come together and celebrate the generosity that is helping us through such difficult times, reflect on God’s generosity to us and explore how we can grow generosity in our lives.

“I’m inspired by the different ways our churches are celebrating Generosity Week this year.

“I know of churches planning thank you events for their volunteers and launching the Parish Giving Scheme to their congregants.

“I’m keen to hear from many more churches about their exciting plans and events.

“We may even be able to join you, if you’re willing, and take some photos to share and offer inspiration for others.”

St John the Divine, Menston are holding a Service of Celebration for the completion of their church roof project on the first Sunday of Generosity week.

The Revd Andrew Howorth, associate priest St John’s Menston said: “We have been so thankful for the generosity of individuals in the church and the local community.

“This has been a massive project for us and support from charitable agencies and grants has also enabled us to complete this project and replace this roof.

“The original one was 150 years old - we are praying the new one will last as long!”

The Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, said: “Generosity lies at the heart of Christian discipleship.

“God’s generosity to us in Christ is reflected in our resourcing the mission of the Church: to love God, creation and our neighbour as ourselves; to live in God’s world, committed to it as a reflection of God’s love and mercy; and to learn that love and generosity go together.

“I look forward to being inspired by this week and the stories that will be told.”
