Our Keighley churches have teamed up with the local rugby club to help tackle food poverty in the town.
On Sunday, June 26, Managing Director of Keighley Cougars Lisa Gill invited the Revd Mike Cansdale of Keighley Parish to attend the match against Oldham RLFC and run a collection point for the Salvation Army Food Bank and the Good Food Shop.
Lisa said: “Cougars are central to this community and the club and fans want to give back to help those in need.
“We’re glad to be working with Revd Mike to do our bit to tackle food poverty.
“There was a massive response from so many fans.”
Revd Mike was bowled over by the level of response, saying: “The take-up of emergency food has increased over the past few months with the cost-of-living crisis, and the Salvation Army Food Bank shelves were looking rather empty.
“The amazing donations today will go a long way to feeding those in need.”
Alongside Revd Mike was Steve Sprange, Good Food Coordinator, who said: “It’s been a brilliant first year for our shop in the Brunswick Arcade and we’ve more than 60 families signed up as members.
“Referrals are made by schools, health visitors and community organisations but we’re keen to get the word out further about what’s on offer.”
Revd Mike concluded: “We find so many brilliant partners to work with across the community of Keighley and here’s another great example of what we can achieve when we pull together.
“We believe in good things for Keighley and are praying for the peace and prosperity of our town.
“Thank you to everyone who gave so generously today.
“May God bless you!”
