The 10th anniversary of the Diocese of Leeds takes place on Saturday, April 20, 2024 and is an opportunity for us all to both reflect and look forward to coming decades.
The Diocese was created in 2014, and the Rt Revd Nick Baines became its first Bishop in June of that year. We have three cathedrals of equal status: Ripon, Wakefield, and Bradford, and there are five episcopal areas within the diocese, each led by an area bishop: Leeds, Ripon, Wakefield, Bradford and Huddersfield.
The Diocese of Leeds comprises all the ecclesial traditions of the Church of England. It also reaches across urban, suburban and rural communities, where the challenge for the future is how the Gospel is to be faithfully and creatively proclaimed and lived in a changing world.
We are a vibrant diocese, equipping confident clergy to enable confident Christians to live and tell the Good News in our large region.
The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd Stephen Cottrell, will be visiting the diocese for the weekend beginning Friday, April 19 and he will meet people all Episcopal Areas and a variety of ministries and contexts.
There will be a special Diocesan Service at Bradford Cathedral on Saturday, April 20, led by Archbishop Stephen and with stories and songs to celebrate the anniversary. Due to limited space, it is by invitation only and these will be shared equally across the areas. Our churches, cathedrals, schools, and other areas of engagement are all encouraged to mark the 10th Anniversary in some way through a service or event from April 22 onwards, with Pentecost (May 19) as a particularly fitting occasion.
A new web page has been created to share information on the 10th Anniversary and details of Archbishop Stephen’s visit and more stories of special events will be uploaded soon.
