Mothers' Union Global Day of Action to highlight domestic abuse victims

The plight of domestic abuse victims will be highlighted at a special event at Huddersfield Parish Church on the Mothers' Union Global Day of Action next week.

The event at St Peter's Parish Church in Huddersfield is on Saturday, November 25 and starts at 12.30pm with a 20 minute reflective service led by Revd Michelle Petch, MU Chaplain for the Huddersfield Episcopal Area.

Everyone will be asked to stand against domestic abuse and to show solidarity with those who are abused and to consider how we, and the many organisations, churches and the Council throughout this area, can support those who are abused.

All are welcome from across the diocese, said MU Huddersfield Episcopal Area President, Julia Tum:

“We hope that this will be a huge event, encouraging a large number of people from all walks of life to attend, and those who support women who have been abused and their families.”

The event is linked to the annual international campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence which starts on November 25 - the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.  The 16 days run until Human Rights Day on December 10.

After the service, attendees will stand outside the church for a silent vigil from 1pm to 1.03pm - which represents the shocking statistic that 1 in 3 women in the UK suffer from domestic abuse.

The church will remain open for anyone to look through relevant resources to talk to any of the staff from the Refuges and the agencies, and to Revd Canon Rachel Firth from the Parish Church or to Revd Michelle Petch who is the MU Episcopal Area Chaplain.
