A great series of Saturday morning lectures and seminars kicks off at St Mark’s Harrogate this month.
The lectures begin on Saturday, September 28 with Dr David Moffit, on Looking through the Kaleidoscope: Hebrews’ Use of Old Testament Narratives in the Light of Jesus’ Ascension and Awaited Return. David is Reader in New Testament Studies, St Andrew’s University and was personally recommended to us by the eminent theologian Tom Wright, who said of him, “David Moffitt is one of the very few contemporary scholars to provide fresh and compelling readings of the enigmatic Letter to the Hebrews. Also, unlike some top exegetical scholars, he is a lively and engaging speaker!"
Harrogate’s own Revd Dr Alan Garrow, vicar of St Peter’s and a distinguished theologian, will lead people through The Didache Discoveries: Two missing books of the Bible on Saturday November 26. An ancient text, the Didache, nearly achieved inclusion in the New Testament canon, but after it was placed in the ‘second rank’, it disappeared for well over a thousand years. After years of research, Revd Alan is able to present a new solution to the puzzle which helps illuminate doctrines and practices that remain essential for Christians today.
Remaining with local and distinguished speakers, on Saturday, January 18, 2025 St Mark’s will welcome the Rt Revd Arun Arora, Bishop of Kirkstall, whose lecture title is still to be confirmed, but who never fails to educate and entertain on any topic.
Finally, on Saturday, March 22, 2025, nationally-acclaimed theologian and author Prof Nicola Slee, will lecture on Abba, Amma: Improvisations on the Lord's Prayer. She will share something of her own journey with the Lord's Prayer and suggest that we are called, not so much to repeat the prayer unvaryingly, as to live in its pattern and improvise around it to find our own authentic way of praying and our own authentic relationship to the Abba Amma (Mother/Father) God of Jesus.
All the lectures are offered in person, at St Mark’s Church, Leeds Rd, Harrogate, starting promptly at 10am, but preceded by breakfast. The lectures are also available by live-stream (on Zoom).
They alternate weekly with group seminars on a range of fascinating and spiritual subjects that are hosted at Woodlands, Methodist Church, Wetherby Rd, Harrogate and are also preceded by breakfast. They are in person only (no Zoom option).
